In radiation therapy high energy rays are used to damage cancer cells and stop them from growing and dividing. Radiation therapy is a local treatment and is designed to affect cancer cells in the treated area. The treatment may be external and come from a machine or it may be in the form of an implant, a small container of radioactive material placed directly in or near a tumor.
