Diabetes is a condition in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin.
Insulin is a hormone released by the pancreas. It helps convert sugar, starches and other
foods into glucose (blood sugar), which is the main source of fuel for the body. When
the body doesnt produce or properly use insulin, the glucose builds up in the blood,
overflows into the urine and is passed out of the body. As a result, the body loses its
main source of fuel.
The impact of diabetes can be devastating. It is linked to long-term complications that
affect almost every part of the body. These complications include blindness, heart disease,
stroke, kidney failure, nerve damage and amputation. Diabetes is one of the leading causes
of death and disability in the United States.
