Ears, Nose and Throat Surgery
ENT surgery is concerned with the ears, nose and throat. The primary objectives in
ENT surgery are to correct malformations and dysfunctions in these areas. ENT surgery
procedures routinely performed at Little Company of Mary Hospitals include:

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
Endoscopic sinus surgery is a procedure used to remove blockages in the sinuses due
to chronic sinusitis (inflammation or infection of the sinuses), polyps or a deviated
septum. Sinuses are air-filled cavities in the head. Sinusitis can impair breathing and
cause pain. The procedure involves inserting an endoscope, a thin flexible lighted
instrument, into the nose, providing an internal view of the sinuses. Surgical
instruments are used in conjunction with the endoscope, to remove bone or other
tissue blocking the sinus opening. Either general or local anesthesia may be used.
Patients can usually go home the same day.
Septoplasty
The nasal septum is the cartilage and bony partition that separates the left and
right nasal cavities. A crooked (deviated) septum can interfere with breathing,
cause uncontrollable nosebleeds, repeated sinus infections or other complications.
A septoplasty is performed to straighten out the deviation and relieve the obstruction.
The procedure is performed through the nose, without an external incision. The damaged
part of the septum is removed or reshaped. This procedure is performed under general or
local anesthesia in an outpatient setting. A septoplasty, alone, does not change the
external shape of the nose. It can be performed in conjunction with a rhinoplasty
(plastic surgery of the nose).
